Eito Kurokawa: Chasing the Light of Tomorrow
In Japan's competitive kickboxing scene, Eito Kurokawa is pursuing a simple but ambitious goal: to become a fighter whom everyone considers the world's best.
What stands out about Kurokawa is his respect for fellow fighters. He understands that stepping into the ring means confronting fear, pressure, and loneliness.
"I respect all martial artists," he says. "Stepping into the ring is a lonely endeavor. It's a battle against fear and loneliness."
Like every serious athlete, Kurokawa has made sacrifices. The biggest has been giving up much of his free time to focus on training and improvement.
When asked what combat sports have given him, his answer reflects the honesty and humility of someone who understands both the highs and lows of the sport:
"It gives me dreams, and it takes them away."
Kurokawa remembers feeling excited before his first fight, and when asked what his younger self would think of him today, he says, "I don't think he could even imagine it."
Perhaps his most memorable answer comes when asked what he thinks about while looking across the ring at his opponent.
"The light of tomorrow."
